How to draw simple rangoli designs
Clean the floor and mark the centre with a small chalk dot. Draw the whole outline in chalk first: it is easy to wipe away and fix.
Fill the shapes from the centre outwards, so your hand never rests on finished parts. Pinch the powder between your thumb and first finger and let it fall slowly in a thin stream.
Finish with a white outline around each shape. A neat white border makes even the simplest design look sharp. When you are comfortable, try our rangoli designs with dots, which use a grid of dots to keep the pattern even.
Tips
- Draw the outline with chalk first. Chalk wipes away easily if you make a mistake.
- Practise a few lines on newspaper before you start on the floor.
- Use a tea strainer to sprinkle colour evenly over large areas.
- Start with two or three colours. Fewer colours make a simple design look cleaner.
Frequently asked questions
What are the easiest simple rangoli designs?
A small flower rangoli is the easiest. You only draw a circle and petals around it, then fill them with two or three colours. The Daily Rangoli Design and the Simple Rangoli Design for Beginners on this list both take 10 minutes or less.
What do I need to start making rangoli?
Rangoli colours, white rangoli powder for outlines and a piece of chalk are enough to begin. A rangoli cone or tea strainer helps, but is not required.
How can I make my rangoli lines thinner?
Use less powder and move your hand steadily at the same speed. A rangoli pen or a paper cone with a small hole also gives thin, even lines.
