How to draw a peacock rangoli

Draw the body first as a long S-shaped curve with a small head and crest. Then draw the tail as a fan of long feathers, either spread out in a half circle or flowing behind the body.

Each feather ends in an “eye”: an oval of dark blue inside green, with a touch of gold or yellow. Draw all the eyes the same size so the tail looks balanced.

Use royal blue for the neck and body, green for the feathers, and a little yellow, orange or white for highlights. Start with the Simple Peacock Rangoli to learn the shapes before trying a big design.

Tips

  • Outline every feather in white. It separates the blues and greens so the tail does not look muddy.
  • Use a rangoli cone for the fine lines of the crest and the feather tips.
  • For Diwali, place diyas along the curve of the tail.

Frequently asked questions

Which colours are used in peacock rangoli?

Royal blue, peacock green, teal and dark blue are the main colours, with yellow, orange or gold for the feather eyes and white for outlines.

Is a peacock rangoli design good for Diwali?

Yes. Peacock rangoli is one of the most popular Diwali designs, and is also drawn for Janmashtami because the peacock feather is linked with Lord Krishna.

How long does a big peacock rangoli take?

About one and a half hours for a 3 ft design with two peacocks. A small 1.5 ft peacock takes about 20 minutes.
