This simple Diwali rangoli has a small flower in the middle and four diyas pointing outwards. It is about 1.5 ft wide, takes around 15 minutes and needs only five colours, so it is ideal if you are drawing a rangoli for the first time.
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1

Draw a small circle (about 4 inches) in the centre with chalk, then draw 8 rounded petals around it.
Step 2

Draw four diya shapes at the top, bottom, left and right, with the flame of each diya pointing outwards.
Step 3

Fill the centre circle yellow and the petals red. Fill each diya orange and its flame yellow with a red tip.
Step 4

Add small green leaves between the diyas and finish with a white dotted outline around the whole design.
Tips
- Sweep and slightly dampen the floor first so the colours stay in place.
- Fill from the centre outwards so you do not smudge finished parts.
- Place a real lit diya on each painted diya in the evening.
